“I was sad the day I realized they were getting to the stage of life that made it impossible for them to make that trip to North Dakota.”īeth’s cousin Kay told her that Arlene loved Lawrence Welk, noting, “The only time she sat down to watch TV on Sunday evening was when the family got to watch ‘Wild Kingdom,’ Disney and then Lawrence Welk. “They also would make an annual summer trip to North Dakota to see me and other cousins, starting in Fargo, making their way to Cavalier to see Stan’s family, our family in New Town, Stan’s nephew in Killdeer (N.D.) and ending at Valley City (N.D.) at my sister’s, actually making a full circle of North Dakota, if you will, to see us all. Arlene and Stan also stood in as grandparents for the marriage of my oldest daughter.
“After the death of my parents in 19,” Beth writes, “Arlene and Stan took over voluntarily as my three children’s surrogate grandparents, never missing a birthday or Christmas without a big package coming in the mail. One more thing: The family also took a driving tour of the area where her grandparents’ farm was. Beth titled it “Because two people fell in love,” meaning the grandparents Gorum, because it was because of their love and marriage that all of these family members existed. They then drove to Cavalier, N.D., where Stan was from, and spread some ashes at the small town of Akra, N.D., west of Cavalier.įinally, the rest of the remains will be spread on the Outer Banks region of North Carolina when the Morrison family gets together this summer.Ī picture was taken last week of all the Morrison cousins, grandchildren, great-nieces and great-nephews. Now, they held a memorial service in Arlene’s home church, Stordahl Lutheran, in rural Galesburg, N.D.Īfter the service the ashes were buried in a small baby food jar which, as Beth writes, was fitting, since Arlene had so many children. Last Saturday, May 4, Beth, along with Kay Webb, Carmel, Ind., the only daughter out of the Morrisons’ seven children, and the rest of the family brought Stan and Arlene’s ashes to North Dakota.Ī memorial service was held in Carmel, where the couple had been living in an assisted living facility. Well, that time came about a year later Arlene passed in November 2018.
